DETAILS

Dr. Nickie Floyd is a 2010 vocal alumni from the Mississippi School of the Arts. Since graduating, Nickie has obtained various degrees in education from Mississippi State University, Howard University, and the University of Southern Mississippi. Nickie’s academic professions include teaching Elementary and Middle School, being an adjunct professor at the University of Southern Mississippi, being Director of a Teaching Residency, and as a Director of Teaching and Learning at National University. Nevertheless, Nickie’s first love and main driving force has always been and will always be the arts.

Nickie’s artistic pursuits include songwriting for American Idol Finalist and R&B artist DeAndre Brackensick, Fox’s The Four: The Battle of Stardom finalist JeRonelle, Ally Durr, Zierra Long, and many others. In 2021, Nickie wrote, directed, scored, and produced his first independent film, “I’m From You,” and released his first children’s book, “Jayson’s Choice.” In 2023, Nickie joined the producing team as a producer and artistic consultant of “Slippin Through the Cracks,” a 2024 national tour-bound musical about the life of Mississippi’s multi-Grammy Award Winner Bobby Rush. However, Nickie’s most recent artistic achievement is his most exciting yet. This summer, Nickie will be making his New York Playwriting Debut at New York Theater Festival with his original play “If I Could Go Back” accompanied by original music written by him, set to release April 14, 2022, after being selected as showcase writer for New York Theater Festival. Nickie’s play, If I Could Go Back, was also chosen to showcase at New York’s Fresh Fruit Festival and was a finalist for Black Broadway Men Emerging Writers Program.

Dr. Floyd is the speaker for the 2024 MSA Graduation Commencement Ceremony.
