The Literary Arts Department recently received recognition for entries submitted to the Mississippi Scholastic Press Association’s Best of Mississippi — Literary Magazine Awards, as well as the Eudora Welty Ephemera Prize for High School Creative Writing.

Mississippi Scholastic Press Association Awards released October 19th, 2023:

  • The Best Quality of Writing award for The Phoenix Literary Journal Vol. 15. — Adjudication remarks: “Very well-written pieces that pull you into the story.”
  • A Best Poem finalist was received by senior Erin Erter.
  • Winner for Best Flash Fiction was received by senior Ava Lambert. — Adjudication remarks: “Tragic story with great use of personification to show the greed of humans.”
  • A finalist award for Best Flash Fiction was received by Media Arts senior Joshua Clark.
  • Winner for Best Short Fiction was received by senior Erin Erter. — Adjudication Remarks: “The story was very written and pulled you into the narrator’s world. It left me both wanting more and feeling like the story is perfect as is.”
  • Winner for Best Dramatic Composition was received by senior Erin Erter. — Adjudication Remarks: “Very engaging story. While the story is set in the 70’s, Erter nods to recent events where this story could be very true for someone in this century. The use of the laugh tracks adds a different dimension to the story that is very ironic.”
  • Erin also received a finalist award for the same category, Best Dramatic Composition.
  • A finalist award for Best Dramatic Composition was received by senior Sarah Lawrence.

Eudora Welty Ephemera Prize for High School Creative Writing Awards Released October 19, 2023:

Named in honor of Mississippi University for Women alumna Eudora Welty and one of the W’s early creative writing journals, Ephemera, the $200 prize was awarded to up to 5 entries. All prizewinners were honored at the Eudora Welty Writers’ Symposium at Mississippi University for Women on October 19-21, 2023. Winners were invited to lunch with symposium authors, received their award, and gave a brief reading.
