Shakeera Brent, an MSA Theatre student from Crystal Springs, Mississippi, recently served as a Page in the Mississippi Senate during the 2023 session. A Page is a legislative intern that serves as a clerk, mostly running errands for the House or Senate legislators who sponsor them. Senator Albert Buter, who represents District 36, sponsored Shakeera to serve as a page for a full week.

Pages get to experience the legislative process as it happens, in real-time, on the House or Senate floor, whether there’s an intense debate or roll call to vote. These experiences build leadership skills and creates a better understanding on how government operates. “I really loved it!” said Brent, when asked about her experience.

Shakeera was a sophomore student at Crystal Spring High School before auditioning and being accepted into MSA to continue her performing arts education. She is now learning lines from Shakespeare and gaining experience as a junior student actress.
